Matt Willen
Matt Willen is a professor in the English Department at Elizabethtown College, where he teaches writing and writing related courses. Recently, he has authored two guide books to the Pennsylvania outdoors – 60 Hikes in 60 Miles: Harrisburg and The Best in Tent Camping: Pennsylvania. With the exception of the two waterfall photographs, many of the photographs in the upper dining area were taken in the course of working on these two books.
The other photos, on display in the lower dining room, were taken during a three-week trip to Iceland this past summer, and are selections from his preliminary work on a documentary project on the fishing communities of the West Fjords region of Iceland. “This,” he says, “is the most important project I have taken on in my life.”
Over the next year and a half, Matt will be traveling to Iceland four or five times for several weeks at a time, to meet and live with townspeople, to talk and listen to their stories about how fishing communities have changed, and to photograph and write about how people live in the eight fishing villages in the West Fjords. He hopes, as much as anything that this project will provide something of value and use to residents of the region.
Matt’s photographs are for sale, in the form in which they are hung. A price list is available in the lobby. Other sizes or frames are available by contacting the artist. Feel free to write or call with comments or questions.
